Room Les Dentelles
Take the stairway from the reception hall to reach this lovely, wonderfully light room with exposed beams. The skylight and bull’s eye window help make this room welcoming and bright, with its walls covered in the local ochre-coloured lime: Provence in all its glory! The big four poster bed (160 x 200) in wrought iron is decorated with a bed canopy in a period design. This is a room that’s wonderful to come back to and rest at day’s end. The bull’s eye window offers wonderful views over the grounds and the central ornamental fountain. It also provides a vantage point from which to look on as the breakfast table is set outdoors – usually in high season when the morning looks set to be sunny but the early dewy freshness is still there to be enjoyed.
Michèle has paid particular attention to this bedroom’s décor, with such extra touches as a beautiful birdcage, a picture frame made from first communion handkerchiefs and small lace curtains that she has made herself using embroidery that she’s picked up in bric à brac shops. She loves flea markets and antiques, scouting out old furniture and decorative objects that she then places all around the house. The walls, in a typically Provençal shade of orange, pick up on the different reds of the terracotta floor, creating a warm, truly delightful ambiance. Guests are greeted by bouquets of flowers from the garden, (depending on the season).
An adjoining room acts as a small drawing room. It also has a wrought iron bed – very tempting if you need a little rest and relaxation – and boasts superb views of the Dentelles de Montmirail. This room also provides a place where guests can bring back all the souvenirs that they’ve collected in the course of their travels, sight-seeing trips and shopping sessions in Avignon, the pays d’Aix region or the hill-top villages of the Vaucluse.
The bathroom is more minimalist and intimate, featuring a large shower built into the stone wall and two wash-hand basins recessed into a beautiful stone countertop topped off with gold plumbing fixtures. Bath towels and Occitane en Provence body care products are here to help you experience relaxation and well-being to the full.
‘Les Dentelles’ is the embodiment of Michèle’s abiding passion: to recreate the ambience of the Provence of yesteryear in her house by researching the history, folklore, customs and culture of this region that she loves so much. To do this, she gives new life to period materials, calls on the skills of local craftspeople, tracks down old objects and items of furniture and generally gives a new lease of life to a past that is all too often neglected. Her sole aim in doing so is to give her guests the chance to travel back in time to an unforgettable world, rich in experiences and sensations beyond all imagining.
